In the context of place names, Aňga in Sinhala means a part or unit of land. The usage comes from the word meaning a limb of body in Sinhala as well as in Sanskrit and Pali. In Tamil, the use of a cognate Aṅkam comes after c. 6th century CE.

In another usage exclusive to Sinhala, Aňga also means a strip of land set aside along the banks of a paddy field stretch. This usage may be related to Ańka in Sinhala and Sanskrit meaning the flank part of a body above the hip.
