SLA soldier commits suicide in Ea'raavoor

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper on duty at a watch tower in Iluppaiyadichcheanai in North West Batticaloa shot himself to death Monday afternoon, Ea'raavoor police said.

The victim identified as K.R.M.Ranjith, 19, from Kurunegala region was on duty at the time of the incident on an observation tower on Badulla Road, in an area recently captured from Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Ranjith received punishment for attempting to take home some arms for his own use and was mentally disturbed for some time, military sources said.

His body was taken to Batticaloa Teaching hospital and after post mortem and inquest into the death was handed over to the relatives Tuesday morning.

Iluppaiyadichcheanai is located 16 km North West of Batticaloa.
