Poaratheevu resettled hesitant to stay at home during night

A survey conducted by Inter Religious Federation among the 9027 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) recently resettled in Poaratheevu Pattu in Batticaloa District revealed a vast majority of the civilians avoid staying in their homes at night, survey officials said.

According to the statistics compiled by the Federation, 2300 residences were completely destroyed while 3000 houses were partially damaged during the recent clashes between the armed forces and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE).

In addition 215 poultry farms and 115 Goat farms were significantly affected. As a result, the production of milk in the area has fallen from 20,000 litres to only 2000 litres.

Civilian groups have appealed to the Sri Lanka government through the Federation to arrange for the government officials to visit the area and find a solution to the difficulties faced by the resettled families.
