UPFA's defeat in WPC, warning sign for future-UNP

The victory for the opposition led by the United National Party (UNP) in the Western Provincial Council (WPC) on a no-confidence motion moved against the ruling party of the Sri Lanka government is a warning signal for the defeat of the government in parliament, said UNP General Secretary Mr.Tissa Attanayake at a press briefing held Wednesday morning. WPC is at present being administered by the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

A no-confidence motion moved by the main opposition condemning the government for the rise in cost of living was passed in the WPC monthly meeting held Tuesday by a majority of 24 votes.

52 members voted for the motion and 28 against.

Members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) voted with the UNP.

The Sri Lanka Communist Party (SLCP), a constituent of the UPFA abstained.
