Displaced Uppaaru families to be resettled

About five hundred Tamil and Muslim families displaced from Uppaaru, a village in Kinniya division in Trincomalee district, due to military operations in 1990 and 1999 and sought refuge in others areas are to be resettled, Secretariat sources in Kinniya said.
Kinniya divisional secretariat has been taking steps to resettle them in two phases. These families have now been staying in temporary structures at Aalankerni, and Maharoof Nagar in Kinniya division. About 280 families of both communities who have expressed their willingness to go back to their village would be resettled in the first phase. Non-governmental organizations are assisting
Kinniya divisional secretariat to construct temporary shelters, latrines and other basic infrastructure facilities in Uppaaru, according to civil society sources in Kinniya.
