SLA builds bulwark along Jaffna southern coast

Fearing possible Liberation Tiger infiltration, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers have intensfied construction of a security fence using concertina wires, and additional security posts and bunkers along a 5 km coastal stretch starting from Jaffna Fort including Kaakai theevu, Naavaanthu'rai, Kurunakar and Pommai Ve'li, towns located at the southern underbelly of Jaffna Peninsula, as a protective measure, sources in Jaffna said.

Palmyrah logs brought from Jaffna islets, and other parts of the district are heavily being used by the SLA to strengthen the security fence and reinforce the bunkers, and security posts, coastal area residents said.

While restrictions on night fishing already exists in the said coastal stretch, in the last two days the security forces have blocked civilians from walking on the beach fronts.

Meanwhile, area fishermen expressed concern that the increased activity along this coastal stretch may also be a prelude to imposing additional fishing restrictions, and possible total ban on fishing.
