An employee of Veala'nai Divisional Secretariat (DS), threatened to death continuously, (allegedly by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and its collaborating paramilitary members), sought safety Monday with his superior officers. The officers took steps with the help of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Tuesday for him to be placed in the protective custody in Jaffna prison, HRC sources said. Meanwhile, two Chaiva temple trustees, including an education official in Veala'nai arrested earlier, are still detained at the Sri Lanka police interrogation centre in the 'Fourth Floor', in Colombo.
The DS employee, a 25-year-old youth, in fear of traveling to Jaffna through the SLN manned sentry post at Allaipiddi, had sought protection with his superiors at Veala'nai DS. The officials informed Tuesday HRC Jaffna who in turn sought the service of Kayts Courts regarding the said youth. Kayts Courts authorities made arrangements through Jaffna Courts for the youth to be placed in the protective custody of Jaffna prison. Many government officials working in the islets of Jaffna are facing death threats allegedly by members of the Sri Lanka armed forces and the paramilitary members operating with them, sources in the islets said. Earlier, two officials of Veala'nai Education office, arrested and placed in detention for a long period of time, were released on bail.
