Heavy rain adds to Moothoor IDPs' woes

Heavy rain in Moothoor division have added further misery to displaced Tamil families sheltered in temporary structures in Killiveddi and Paddiththidal in Trincomalee district, civil society sources said. Flood water entering their camps, and leaking roofs have become a burden to carry out day-to-day basic acitivities, sources added.

Women find difficult to cook meals, as they are unable to drain floodwater from temporary huts located in low-lying lands.

Students are unable to go to schools as their textbooks and other learning materials have been soaked in rainwater.

Health authorities fear out break of epidemic such as dengue, diarrhoea and dysentery due to stagnation of floodwater and spread of mosquitoes, civil society sources said.

378 IDP families are staying in Paddiththidal and about 883 families staying in Ki'liveddi. They have been sheltered for more than a year since the Sri Lanka Army offensives in middle part of 2006, sources said.

Trincomalee district is experiencing heavy rain since last Monday.
