Jaffna islands get telephones

Three islands off Jaffna have been linked by telephone for the first time ever. The islands of Eluvaithivu, Analaithivu and Nainathivu have each been given a special Motorola cellular phone unit. Civilians in these islands can now communicate with the outside world on these phones.

Meanwhile the northern regional manager of the government owned Telecom company, Mr. T.Balasubramaniam, said that Jaffna will get 1500 new telephone connections early next year.

He said the basic work for these telephone connections is almost complete.

There are currently two telephone exchanges in the Jaffna peninsula. The one in Jaffna has 550 lines and the other in Pt.Pedro has 52.
