The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) started collecting the details of the mobile phones and their owners in Jaffna peninsula. The SLA has already collected the details of the motor vehicles in the peninsula, and at present is collecting the details of the bicycles. SLA has also started issuing military identity cards to all persons above ten years.
Jaffna residents see these measures with anxiety as part of militarizing the administration in the peninsula and the islets, civil society sources said. The details of the mobile phones and radiophones, and details of the persons who use these telephones are being collected by the officials of the Divisional Secretariats and the local government offices existing in the area. The SLA stationed in Valikaamam West region introduced this new measure and instructed the officials to collect the information.
