Colombo Tamil residents complain of Police harassment

Tamil residents are being harassed in Colombo suburbs of Wattala, Kotahena, Modera, and Wellawatte when they go to police stations to register as instructed by the Defence Ministry. Although instructions from the Defence Ministry do not require residents to produce photographs, the Police officials are demanding photographs, civil society sources said.

The Inspector General of Police has told Mr.P.Radhakrishnan, Colombo district parliamentarian of the Upcountry Peoples Front (UPF) that he would look into the matter.

The IGP had further told the MP that he would not allow any form of harassment against Tamil residents in this regard.
