Lawyers in Jaffna, following a meeting held at Jaffna courts Monday morning attended by the members of the Sri Lankan Army and an association of Attorneys-at–law practicing in the peninsula, have ended Tuesday the boycott protesting against threat to their lives and extortion demands, legal sources said.
The 40 senior attorneys present agreed to call off their boycott based on assurances provided Friday at Palaali Army Headquarters by Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army in Jaffna. The delegation of Northern lawyers are residents of, and work in the areas of Jaffna, Chavakachcheri, Point Pedro, Kayts and Mallaakam. They complained they had been threatened recently by unidentified men demanding large sums of money. They said other professionals including doctors, academics and various businessmen have also been targeted by threats from unidentified men.
