SLA reinforces security in Jaffna town

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna assisted by police, stepped up security measures in Jaffna since Tuesday morning in preparation for the opening of the newly built five story Judicial Complex the central part of town by Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva Wednesday, sources in Jaffna said. Mr Silva is to be accompanied by ministerial dignitaries and World Bank Representative in Sri Lanka.

Justice Ministry Secretary and Rehabilitation Commissioner S. K. Gamlath, Judicial Services Commission Chairman T. W. R. Jeyathilaka, Law and Justice Reform Planning Director Ms. Kamini Gunawardne and other ministerial officials are expected to participate in the official opening of the new complex.

New check points have been constructed on the main avenues of entry into Jaffna town like the Main Street, Jaffna-Point Pedro Road , Jaffn-K.K.S. Road where SLA troops are conducting intensive search since Tuesday noon.

SLA is also conducting extensive and rigorous search operations in Jaffna town area from Tuesday morning.

The newly built five story complex is located close to Duraiappah Stadium, Jaffna Esplanade, Jaffna Central College and Jaffna Public Library in the heart of Jaffna town.

The earlier building in this location housing several Judicial Sections was destroyed in the 1987 military offensive.

The new complex was built after the 2005 Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Sri Lanka State.

The Magistrate Court, District Court, Additional Courts and Appeal Court, all presently functioning in temporary locations, will begin operating in the new complex of the Justice Department.

Meanwhile, foundation stones are to be laid for the new buildings for Chaavakachcheari and Point Pedro courts in their respective locality Wednesday.
