HRC raises Rights issues

Officials of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) discussed matters related to human rights violation in Jaffna, by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and Tamil armed groups operating with them, with Major T.A.R.Lunuwila at the Headquarters of the Security Forces in Palaly, today.
The human rights officials brougt to the notice of the Major T.A.R.Lunuwila problems faced by people during arrests by the Army. They informed the Major that no documents attesting the arrests are given to the relatives of the arrested persons. They also pointed out that people are being forced by armed Tamil groups operating with the security forces to pay them. Major Lunuwila told them that he will not tolerate forces violating human rights. He further said that actions would be taken against those who were forcing the people to pay money if the matter is brought to the notice of the army. Meanwhile, Col. Sanath Karunaratne, 524 Brigade Commander will be leaving to India for two months of training and Col. Chandrawansa will be the new Commander.
