Rajapaksa to withdraw newly imposed censorship

Sri Lankan Presidential Secretariat Wednesday night said the SL President Mahinda Rajapapaksa would withdraw the special gazette notification which he issued on 29 October, imposing censorship in Sri Lanka, by issuing another official Gazatte withdrawal notification, on Thursday. The announcement of the scheduled withdrawal comes following wide publicity on the censorship measures.

The media centre for national security, Wednesday night said the special Gazette on war reporting censorship of No 1521/3 was issued on 29th October 2007 following inaccurate and misleading reporting of LTTE attacks by the ABC radio network and other electronic media.

The government has lifted measures restricting war reporting on a directive from Mahinda Rajapaksa, the media centre run by the Ministry of Defence said.
