Jaffna University starts joint research projects

Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University, Prof. P. Balasuntharampillai, said that special lectures will be held for the students who have not been able to attend lectures due to disruption of transport to the Jaffna peninsula.

Students from other districts, who have got admission for the current year, are stranded in Trincomalee and other places. He said that the special lectures will allow these students to fulfill the courses along with other students, who are attending the University now.

The University is now functioning normally with the students who live in Jaffna.

Meanwhile Prof. Chithiravadivel, chairman of the Marine Resources and Development Centre at the University said that Universities in Australia, China, India, England and Malaysia have expressed their interest in co-operation projects with the centre.

He said the centre has already received some books and research magazines from these universities.

He said there has been an exchange of letters between the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Balasunthirampillai, and these universities and if the co- operation agreement is reached, the students of Jaffna University will be able to make research visits to these Universities.

Meanwhile fishermen in Jaffna, who have been hit by the fishing ban imposed by the Sri Lankan Army, will be entitled to receive relief from the Government said sources in Colombo.

The Government Agent of Jaffna, Mr. Shanmuganathan, who is currently in Colombo has been instructed by government officials to take necessary steps to pay relief money to the affected fishermen the, sources added.

Mr. Shanmuganathan is expected to release further details today.
