Family man seeks protection with Jaffna HRC, flights to Ratmalana resumed

A family man from Valikaamam East sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna Tuesday due to death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and SLA-backed paramilitaries. Meanwhile, two private firms resumed flights from Jaffna to Colombo which were suspended by SLA Monday due to security reasons, sources in Jaffna said.

The family man who sought protection Tuesday is a 37-year-old labourer and the father of two children, from Vaatharavaththai, Puththoor in Valikaamam East.

His wife and children who accompanied him to the HRC returned home after HRC officials made arrangements to have him placed in the protective custody in Jaffna Prison.

Meanwhile, two private firms resumed Tuesday flights from Palaali to Ratmalana in Colombo suspended due to security reasons related to the passing of the budget in Sri Lanka Parliament Monday.

Two return flights to Colombo were made Tuesday by the private firms.

Air travel is the only means of transport now from Jaffna peninsula to Colombo since the SLA closure of A9 land route.
