Fisherman shot dead in Kurunakar, 3 seek protection with HRC Jaffna

Two unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle shot dead a fisherman Tuesday around 11:45 a.m, on Water Tank Road in Kurnakar, Jaffna, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, three family men from three different regions in Jaffna peninsula sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna due to death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitaries.
The fisherman shot dead was identified as Ariyanyagam Res Rehan, 32, a family man from Kurunakar area in Jaffna. Rehan is the third fisherman from Kurunakar to be shot dead in the last two months. Unidentified killers had gunned down one at Mudavai junction in Kurunakar and the other in Irupaalai area. Meanwhile, three family men between the ages of 27 and 49 from Cha’ndilippaai, Yaththaalai in Va’ra’ni and Madduvil in Chaavakachcheari sought protection to their lives with Jaffna HRC Tuesday. A family man from Vadamaraadchi surrendered to HRC Jaffna Monday due to continuing death threats from SLA and SLA-backed paramilitary men. 142 men of varied ages who sought HRC protection are placed in the protective custody of Jaffna Prison. 13 persons including women and children are given protection in Canaan Church institution in Irupaalai. A total of 155 civilians have been given protection by HRC Jaffna.
