Video shop owner shot dead in Eazhaalai

The 25-year old owner of a video store in Eazhaalai in Valikaamam was shot dead by unknown gunmen at 10:30 a.m. Monday at his home, sources in Jaffna said. The gunmen entered the victim's house called out for the youth, and shot him at point blank range.

The victim, C. Maiyooran, had received several death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA)-backed paramilitaries during the last few months, relatives said.

Maiyooran's body has been transferred to the Jaffna Hospital for postmortem examinations.

Number of killings in Jaffna have escalated in recent weeks signifying an intensification of Sri Lanka's counter-terrorism campaign.
