14-year old missing, 3 family men seek protection with HRC

Koa’ndaavil Orphanage authorities made representation in Jaffna Courts Friday that a 14-year-old boy from their institution had gone missing since 6 December. Meanwhile, three family men from various places in Jaffna peninsula sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitaries.

Chandrakumar Tharshan, 14, originally from Mullaiththeevu in Vanni. Tharshan’s parents had died in an SLA offensive and after that he was looked after in Koa’ndaavil Orphange.

Jaffna Acting Magistrate Mr. S. Kesavan directed Jaffna police to investigate into the case of the missing boy and to submit their report on 27 December.

Tharshan may have been abducted as he is originally from Mullaiththeevu in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held Vanni, Koa’ndaavil residents said.

The three family men who sought protection with the HRC are from Kurunakar, Irupaalay and Aavarangkaal. Their ages ranged from 27 to 37.
