Batticaloa elections details released

A total of 101 members are to be elected from nine local councils in the soon to be held local council elections in Batticaloa District, according to the information provided by the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Elections.
The elections office also has released the breakdown of the members to be elected in each local council, the number of candidates to be put forward by each political party and the details of the number of polling booths. Following are the details of the number of members to be elected in each local council:
- Batticaloa Urban Council 19
- Ea'ravoorpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 14
- Koaralaippattu Pradeshiya Sabha 11
- Koaralaippattu North Pradeshiya Sabha 11
- Ma'nmunai and Eruvilpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 10
- Ma’nmunaipattu Pradeshiya Sabha 9
- Ma'nmunai West Pradeshiya Sabha 9
- Ma'nmunai South West Pradeshiya Sabha 9
Each political party or an independent group contesting in the elections must put forward 135 candidates as listed below:
- Batticaloa Urban Council 25
- Ea'ravoorpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 19
- Koaralaippattu Pradeshiya Sabha 15
- Koaralaippattu North Pradeshiya Sabha 15
- Ma'nmunai and Eruvilpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 13
- Ma’nmunaipattu Pradeshiya Sabha 12
- Ma'nmunai West Pradeshiya Sabha 12
- Ma'nmunai South West Pradeshiya Sabha 12
- Poaratheevupattu Pradeshiya Sabha 12
The rules specify 58 of the 135 candidates should be youths. The specifics regarding the 285 polling stations and the number of voters in each of the nine local councils, provided by the elections office are:
- Batticaloa Urban Council 51 polling stations, 54948 Voters
- Ea'ravoorpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 48 polling stations, 45336 Voters
- Koaralaippattu Pradeshiya Sabha 47 polling stations, 41856 Voters
- Koaralaippattu North Pradeshiya Sabha 6 poling stations, 12419 Voters
- Ma'nmunai and Eruvilpattu Pradeshiya Sabha 39 polling stations, 38386 Voters
- Ma’nmunaipattu Pradeshiya Sabha 20 polling stations, 18759 Voters
- Ma'nmunai West Pradeshiya Sabha 18 polling stations, 15771 Voters
- Ma'nmunai South West Pradeshiya Sabha 16, polling stations, 14880 Voters
- Poaratheevupattu Pradeshiya Sabha 30 polling stations, 2816 Voters.
Of the 285, polling stations both men and women can vote in 26 of them With the election arrangements getting heated up, all the political parties and independent groups have become actively involved in choosing their candidates, sources in the region said.
