Parents of 2 arrested students seek HRC help

The parents of two students of Jaffna St. Patrick College arrested and held in connection with Maheswaran’s killing sought help from Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC) Friday to have them released. Jaffna police produced the two students, alleged to be involved in the assassination of Tamil parliamentarian Maheswaran, before Jaffna Magistrate R. T. Vignarajah January 2nd who directed them to be produced before Colombo Chief Justice.

The two students of Jaffna St. Patricks College arrested are Joseph Gijon Mildon, 16 and Johnson Collin Savior, 19, both residents of Kurunakar, Jaffna.

Colombo Police Crime Branch officers took the two students to Colombo by air.

The two youths were arrested on information claimed to be found in the National Identity Card (NIC) of the youths injured in the shooting of Maheswaran.

Jaffna police conducted a search in the Kurunakar address and arrested the two youths on instructions by Colombo Crime Branch to Jaffna Assistant Superintendent of Police, the sources said.

Jaffna HRC officials have referred the appeal to their Colombo head office with request to have the two students released through legal means.

One of the NIC addresses was Kurunakar and the other from Wattala in Colombo, according to Jaffna police.

Some have been arrested from the Wattala address, the sources added.
