Movements of Jaffna councillors restricted

All councillors of local government bodies in the Jaffna peninsula, except those representing the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) have been banned from entering the islands off the peninsula, the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) said.

The ban came following a grenade attack on an independent member of the Kayts Pradeshiya Sabha on November 30.

The SLN said that the ban would be enforced until they had made satisfactory security arrangements there.

All Tamil parties representing the local government bodies have expressed their concern over the SLN's announcement.

Some of the councillors of the PLOTE, EPRLF and TELO who went to the islands on an official visit were turned back at Allaipiddy junction, said sources in Jaffna.
