Reggie Ranatunge sworn in as new MP

Mr. Reggie Ranatunge was sworn in as new parliamentarian when the Sri Lanka parliament resumed its sitting Thursday morning. Speaker W.J.M.Lokkubandara administered oaths to Mr. Reggie Ranatunge who relinquished his post of Governor of Sabragamuwa Provincial Council to accept the new position, parliamentary sources said.
At the last general election Mr.Sripathi Sooriyarachchi was elected to the parliament as he obtained more votes than Mr. Reggie Ranatunge under the proportionate representation system in the Gampaha district. With the death of Mr.Sooriayarachchi, Mr. Reggie Ranatunge was automatically nominated to fill the vacancy, parliamentary sources said. Before being appointed as the governor, Mr. Reggie Ranatunge held the post of minister. He is the father of Mr. Arjuna Ranatunge who is also a parliamentarian in the current parliament and also a former captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team that won the World Cup in 1996.
