The cost for sea transport by passenger ship from Kankesanturai (KKS) to Trincomalee is to increase from the current rate of Rs.3162.50 to Rs.3300.00 effective Saturday March 01, R.Sivaswamy, Additional Government Agent (AGA), announced in a communiqué issued to the media Tuesday night.
A passenger is permitted to carry 25 kilo of baggage but for every additional 25 kilo they would have to pay another Rs.3300.00, the communiqué further added. After the closure of the land route A-9 Highway since August 11, 2006 the civilians in the North rely on either air or sea transport to travel out of the peninsula. With the cost of one way flight from Jaffna to Colombo being Rs.9500.00, the less privileged members of the public have been opting to travel by sea. However even this cheaper mode of transport which originally cost Rs.1800.00 has been increased several times to reach current levels.
