Comparing the situation in Sri Lanka with the State of Kosovo before it declared independence, Weerawanse, parliamentary group leader the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the general secretary of the National Patriotic Movement at a press briefing held Wednesday said that the situations are similar, and that the damaging report by Ms Louis Arbor, High Commission of the UN Human Rights on Kosovo paved the way for Kosovo independence, media sources said.
The Sri Lanka government led by President Mahinda Rajapakse should immediately abandon the idea of implementing the 13th amendment to the constitution devolving power on racial basis with police and judiciary powers. Mr.Rajapakse was voted to power at the last presidential election not to devolve power on ethnic basis, Mr.Wimal Weerawanse said. Sri Lanka's future is at cross roads due to contradictory foreign policy of the present government. On one side President Mahinda Rajapakse visited Iran, and the Prime Minister is currently on a visit to Israel. A day would come when no country in the world would support Sri Lanka at a time of crisis, Mr.Wimal Weerawanse added. Implementation of 13th amendment with police and judiciary powers would certainly lead to a separate state in the island, said Dr.Gunadasa Samarasekara, President of the National Patriotic Movement.
