ASP succumbs to wounds

G.G.Siriwardena Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), in charge of sector 6 of the Main Supply Route along the Vavuniya-Mankulam trunk road died in a Colombo hospital early this morning, Police sources said.

Siriwardena, a native of Alawwa in Kurunegala district, was seriously wounded, along with four other policemen, in claymore mine attack at Panikkaneeravi north of Omanthai on November 29.

He was rushed to Anuradhapura hospital and transferred to Colombo for further treatment. He succumbed to his injuries there after about three weeks.

The Police jeep carrying the ASP and other policemen was caught in the claymore blast around 7.15pm. The police blame the Liberation Tigers for the attack.
