Pillayan group on recruitment drive among Paduvaankarai resettlers

The paramilitary operatives of Pillayan group are intimidating and threatening recently resettled families in Paduvaankarai in Batticaloa district to allow one member from each family to join the group, residents from the area told TamilNet.
The candidates who successfully contested on behalf of Pillayan group during the recent Batticaloa Municipal council elections have started the recruiting campaign using terror tactics, sources added. The newly elected councilors have also threatened that any family refusing their orders will have to pay Rs.100,000, failing which they will be forced out of Batticaloa district. The paramilitaries have also issued orders that the residents should vote for them, and have warned the residents that if the their candidates are defeated the residents have to bear serious consequences. Residents have made complaints to the police and to the representatives of various Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), but no one has made any preventive action, according to the residents.
