ICRC Jaffna branch issues figures of victims receiving assistance

The ICRC has managed to airlift 1,500 of the patients in Jaffna in need of urgent and special treatment to Colombo, after September 2006, when the A9 highway which links Jaffna peninsula with the rest of the island was closed down, the Jaffna branch of the organisation assisting the victims of war said in a media release issued to media in Jaffna. The ICRC also provides year round assistance to 23 hospitals. The ICRC was contributing to more than 50 health assistance projects in the districts of Noth and East.

70 newly enrolled invalids of the 400 who receive treatment and therapy in the Jaffna Jaipur Centre for Disability Rehabilitation have been provided with artificial organs, the report said.

The ICRC has also been promised access to monitor more than 2000 persons detained by the warring parties in 160 detention facilities. Particulars on 2,100 persons being kept in detention have been registered.

Apart from the above mentioned activities, ICRC is also engaged in registering complaints on killings and forced disappearances. Information gathered from warring parties and other sources are duly conveyed to the complainants whenever possible, the report further said.
