Southern fishermen told to register their crafts

Sinhalese fishermen in the south have been directed by the Department of Fisheries to register their fishing crafts before venturing in fishing. This is to enable the Sri Lanka Navy to identify illegal crafts in the southern sea to curb terrorist activity, media reports said.

Fisheries officials say that the department has embarked on a project of registering all fishing crafts throughout the country.

Officials allege that many fishermen in South are using fishing crafts without registering them with the Department of Fisheries, reports added.
