SL Supreme Court to inquire petitions against PCs dissolution

Petitions filed by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) separately challenging the dissolution of Sabragamuwa Provincial Council and North Central Provincial Council are to be inquired by a panel of judges of the Supreme Court, legal sources said.

UNP and JVP filed petitions, two each in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court last week seeking the court to annul the gazette notification issued by the respective governors dissolving these two provincial councils. The petitioners say that the dissolution has been against the law, legal sources said.

These petitions had been forwarded to the Chief Justice Sarath Silva for necessary action. Court sources said the Chief Justice has decided to appoint a panel of judges to hold inquiry into these petitions.
