2 policemen shot dead in Kalmunai

Unidentified gunmen following on a motorcycle two policemen along Kalmunai-Batticaloa main street shot and killed them with pistols Thursday around 9:10 a.m near P'l'laiyaaradi junction, sources in Kalmunai said. Tension prevails in Kalmunai.

The police men killed were identified as Police Constables Mohamed Kazzaliy, and K. Ramesh.

The policemen were riding on a motorcycle from Chammaaththu'rai police station to Kalmunai magistrate court when the killers following them opened fire on them.

Special Task Force (STF) elite commandos who rushed to the place immediately after the shooting subjected the people going along the road to severe checking and assaulted some of them, residents of the area said.

The bodies of the victims are kept at Kalmunai Ashroff Hospital.
