Director of SCOPP visits Batticaloa

Director of Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP), Professor Rajiva Wijayasinghe, visited Tuesday Batticaloa to study the situation in Batticaloa district and to identify the obstacles in resuming normalcy of life of the people of Batticaloa district, Batticaloa District Secretariat sources said. Security was beefed up around District Secretariat and the Judicial Complex. The officials were not permitted to take their vehicles in, according to sources.
The visiting director held discussions with Batticaloa District Secretary, Ms. R. Ketheeswaran, key government officials, Officers of the armed forces, religious dignitaries and representatives of civil organizations. Abductions, violence on youths, restrictions and harassment by state armed forces at check posts, the lack of legal help for the needy, the abscence of a government institution or an officer to lodge complaints of injustice against public and the derelict state of roads were the matters brought to the notice of the director, the sources added.
