SLA to control urea supplies

Jaffna farmers will be able to buy urea now after a gap of seven years. The army told the Jaffna GA today to send lorries to collect 500 metric tons of urea which have been lying at the KKS harbour since June this year.

The army had decided at that time that the Urea could not be permitted into Jaffna for security reasons.

The Sri Lankan defence establishment believes that the Liberation Tigers produce explosives for their mines from Urea.

As a consequence the fertiliser is banned in most rural parts of island's northeast which are controlled by the LTTE.

However, the army has said that the manner and form of distributing the fertiliser will be determined according to the discretion of each area commander in the peninsula.
