"Those who congratulated me when I successfully led the military operation against the LTTE in the war front have been now carrying out a slandering campaign against me. Soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army now moving forward in the war front against LTTE are also to face same fate in future," said Major General (retd) Janaka Perera, chief candidate of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) addressing a press briefing held in Anuradhapura Friday.

"Slandering campaign against me is tantamount to disgracing the soldiers who lost their limbs and lives in the war," he added. The government has been clamoring that it has recaptured the east from the LTTE. Maj. Gen. Parakrama Pannipitya who led the military thrust against the east has been sidelined by the government and he has not been provided with bodyguards to save his life from LTTE attack, Janaka Perera said.
