Eighty percent support the proposals - President

The Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Bandaranayaike Kumaratunge, while speaking at a rally at Makkunuwewa, in the Hiriyala electorate, yesterday (January 10), said that an ethnic conflict could not be resolved by military means though it is possible to find a military solution to a war.

She said that more than 80 percent of people in the Northeast have expressed their willingness to accept the political proposals put forward by the government, aimed at solving island's ethnic conflict.

The President expressed confidence that before long these people would act to discard the LTTE leader, Prabhakaran, from among them.

She pledged to conduct elections on the due date by in contrast to what happened during the past regime.

The President said that the government allocated funds to the North West Provincial Council through all its budgets, but what happened to these funds was a problem.

She said sufficient development had not taken place in the province.

She added that the matter will be looked into and action taken against those concerned.

She also said information with regard to 2000 people out of a total of around 3000 who disappeared in the North Western Province during the previous period of terror have already been gathered.

The president vowed that those responsible for these disappearances would be dealt with under the law in the near future.
