Tamil trustee shot dead in Ea’raavoor

Unidentified armed men arriving at the house of a Tamil Justice of the Peace (JP) Monday around 8:30 p.m at Thevaapuram in Ea’raavoor police division in Batticaloa district opened fire on him. The seriously injured JP was first rushed to Chengkaladi hospital and then transferred to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds Tuesday around 4:00 a.m.
The victim Subramaniam Nagarasa, 61, the father of six children was a Justice of the Peace and the trustee of Murakkodaancheanai, Thevaapuram Paththini Amman Temple. Nagarasa is a resident of Paththini Amman Veethi, Thevapuram, Murakkodaancheanai in Ea’raavoor. The parmilitary-cum-political party TMVP had forced Nagarasa, a prominent local figure, to contest in the March local election as its candidate, Thevaapuram residents said. Ea’raavoor is located 25 km north of Batticaloa town.
