25 Tamils arrested in Gampaha

Twenty five Tamil civilians were taken into custody Tuesday morning in a cordon and search conducted in Gampaha police division in the Western Province by the Sri Lanka Army and police with the assistance of homeguards.

Most of them, being detained in the Gampaha police station, are Tamils from the North and East and had been working in shops and other institutions. Some are residents of upcountry areas.

The operation commenced Monday night and continued till 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police said they were being interrogated by the Terrorist Intelligence Division as they failed to prove their identity and provide valid reason for their stay in the province.
