Police arrest six SLA deserters in Ambalangoda

Six deserters from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) were taken into custody in a cordon and search operation conducted by the police in Ambalangoda, a town in the southern province Tuesday night, sources said. The arrested were remanded on the orders of Ambalangoda Magistrate Wednesday, according to legal sources.
Meanwhile, in a media release in Colombo, the SLA Directorate of Legal Services said that several hundred deserters now custody are scheduled to be tried by the Court Martial within the next few weeks. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told a news conference that deserters can still report to their respective divisions and face lesser penalty. "In the meantime, we will continue to track down deserters," he added.
