Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) officials in the East on Thursday said a guerrilla team of the Tigers triggered a Claymore mine killing four Sri Lankan Special Task Force (STF) commandos and causing injuries to three, Wednesday around 5:30 p.m., near Pulipaaynthakal, which is located 30 km north of Batticaloa.
The STF commandos were on a road patrol from Koozhaavadi 5th Mile Post camp to Pulipaaynthakal (which in Tamil means the rock from which the Tiger leapt). Pulipaaynthakal stands at the entrance to the large jungle hinterland in the northwestern sector of the Batticaloa district. The hinterland, known in Tamil as Tharavai-Vadamunai region with Kudumpi-maiai (Thoppik-kal) in its interior is called by the SLA and the Sinhala press as Thoppigala jungles. The LTTE maintained its conventional forces in these jungles till July 2007.
