3 civilians including a woman seek refuge with HRC Jaffna

A young woman from Kaithadi North in Thenmaraadchi and two brothers from Navakkiri in Puththoor area in Valikaamam sought refuge with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna office Monday due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and SLA-backed paramilitaries, according to their complaints to HRC. The recent killing of a woman by unidentified armed men in Kaithadi North was the reason for the young woman to seek refuge while the brothers sought refuge following the recent shooting in Navakkiri area seriously injuring a mother and her daughter, according to statements to the HRC by the complainants.
The young woman who sought refuge from Kaithadi North in Thenmaraadchi is 22-years-old. The two brothers who sought refuge from Navakkiri in Puthoor are 31 and 21 years old and are farmers. HRC officials are taking steps to place the young woman and the two brothers in the protective custody of Jaffna Prison. On Wednesday 10 September unidentified gunmen shot and killed a young woman in Kaithadi North in Thenmaraadchi. The woman had to report at the local SLA camp every week and sign in a register there and had done so on Wednesday. On Monday 8 September unidentified gunmen on motorcycles who forcibly entered a house in Navakkiri in Puththoor shot and seriously injured a mother and her daughter around 6:00 pm.
