Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunge has advised the Elections Commissioner to fix a date for the Councils polls in the Uva, Central, North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces, sources in Colombo said today.
She had reminded the Elections Commissioner that on 4 August 1998, the dates for polls to these Provincial Councils were cancelled through the Gazette notification. She had said that the government had been forced to postpone the polls for these Provincial Councils due to security reasons. The President has informed the Elections Commissioner that the government now is able to provide the necessary security to hold the Council polls in these five provinces.
