Former Indian PM V.P. Singh passes away

Former Prime Minister of India, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, passed away in New Delhi at the age of 77 on Thursday. He was Prime Minister of India between December 1989 to November 1990.

Mr. Singh earned name as "Mr. Clean" while he was finance minister in mid-80's and took on industrialists by launching tax investigations. At the height of his campaign against fraud, he was shifted from Finance to Defence in 1987. He resigned as Defence Minister and left the party to strengthen the Janata Dal coalition and became Prime Minister of India in 1989.

V.P. Singh withdrew the Indian forces that were engaged in a war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) in 1989 when he came to power.
