Women accuse Islamic fundamentalists of attack

Three Muslim women were found tied to lamp posts with their heads completely shaved and stripped to their waists in the early hours of the morning today in the village of Iyankerni, sixteen kilometers north of Batticaloa.

One of the women complained that she was raped along with the others by six Muslim youth in the early hours of the morning today around 3 a.m.

Their assailant, according to the woman, had stripped and shaved them before tying them to the lamp posts.

As the doctor who examined this woman found her bleeding, she was sent to the Batticaloa hospital for further examination and treatment said Police sources in Eravur.

Informed residents said that the youth are members of an Islamic fundamentalist group that is active in the area. The six youth had accused the three women of wanton promiscuity.

The women are married and had returned recently after working as house maids in west Asian countries.

There are several Islamic fundamentalist groups active in the east that are agitating for the strict implementation of Islamic law.
