9 Tamil youths arrested, security tightened in Trincomalee

Nine Tamil youths were taken into custody by the Sri Lanka Police in Trincomalee town on Friday on suspicion that they had been active cadres of LTTE. They youths are being detained in Trincomalee police station and are being subjected to severe interrogation by the Terrorist Intelligence Division (TID), sources said.

Meanwhile, the security of the Trincomalee town has been tightened to monitor the movement of strangers.

Police have taken this measure to ensure violent free Independence Day celebration in Trincomalee on February 4, police sources said.

Troops have been deployed at every junction in the town. All vehicles and motor bikes are subjected to severe checks. Soldiers and police check bags and baggage of every one who moves inside the Trincomalee municipal area, civil sources said.
