“The people in Vanni are undergoing unprecedented suffering and pain without any food, medicine, clothes and places to seek shelter, in the unrelenting attacks on them and we urge the concerned parties and the International Community to help stop the war on the Tamils immediately,” Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) said in a media report Thursday.
Students, lecturers, staff, employees of Jaffna University and the Vice-chancellor are observing silent prayer and fasting for an hour daily, since Monday for the sake of the suffering Vanni Tamils, urging the International Community to intervene to stop the war at once. All activities of the University are suspended during the one hour silent prayer and fast, which continues from Monday. JSSU sought humanitarian assistance to stop the war and save the Tamils from annihilation and enable them to live in peace, in its media report. The following requests were placed by JUSU in the report: Stop the killing of innocent people and their forced displacement. Treat the people who had sought refugee in government held areas with humanity. Stop the war and make peace through negotiation. Recognize the Tamils’ rights to self-determination, traditional homeland and Tamil Nationality. International Community should urgently intervene to bring about a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
