[TamilNet, Thursday, 26 February 2009, 17:56 GMT]
A family man from Aavarangkaal East in Puththoor sought protection to his life with Chunnaakam police due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, Thursday. He had managed to escape arrest by SLA during a cordon and search conducted in his village after which his wife had tried to commit suicide, he told the police. His wife had later been taken into custody by the SLA and detained while his son who was arrested by SLA had been released as he was a school going student, he said in his statement to the police.

SLA claimed that they had found a cache of weapons concealed near the family man's house in Aavarangkaal in the search during which two youths had been shot and killed recently.

SLA soldiers have been searching for the family man who had sought protection to his life.

Chunnaakam police decided to hand over the family man to Achchuveali police under whom his village falls so that they could produce him in the court of law.

Meanwhile, Oorkaavattu’rai magistrate court granted permission to the police to send the explosives captured from four fishermen on Mannaar seas recently to Sri Lanka Forensic Department for analysis.

The four fishermen are now being held in detention in Jaffna prison.

The police also sought permission to explode some of the confiscated explosives and to send the samples for analysis which the court granted.

Fishermen from Mannaar frequently use explosives in fishing, sources in Oorkaavattu’rai said.
