Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) extended an appeal to the government of Sri Lanka to enable Jaffna University students from Vanni held in the detention camps in Government controlled areas to continue their studies in Jaffna University, in a press report Friday. JUSU also said that though it has been said in the media that a group of Vanni students held in the detention camps had been flown to Jaffna to continue studies so far none of them had come to Jaffna University.
University students from Vanni who had been detained in the Menik Farm detention camp in Vavuniyaa were said to have been flown to Jaffna to recommence studies, according to a news broadcast by a TV station quoting Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services. JUSU, however, said that no such student had returned to the campus. Relatives of the university students held in detention camps have also made appeals to the authorities to enable the students to continue their studies in Jaffna University where educational activities have returned to normalcy, sources in Jaffna said.
