Armed men shoot dead medical specialist in Vavuniyaa

Unidentified armed persons waylaid a medical specialist of
Vavuniyaa general hospital and shot at him Monday night around 7:00 p.m. when he was returning after attending patients in a private medical institution at Theakkuwathai in Vavuniyaa police division. He was rushed to the Vavuniyaa general hospital in a critical condition, but succumbed to injuries on admission to the hospital, police sources said.
The victim is said to be from Muslim community. The private practice of all medical officers of Vavuniyaa general hospital in private medical institutions has been suspended with immediate effect following this killing. Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has issued a statement that the safety and security of medical officers of Vavuniya general hospital should be ensured immediately. Otherwise the entire medical service in the area would come to a standstill, warned GMOA Vice President Mr.Upul Gunasekara.
