More than three hundred Tamils were arrested this afternoon in Colombo. The arrests are in reaction to the attack on the Kelanitissa power station on Friday.
Sri Lankan Police rounded up Tamil youth walking out of the Capitol cinema theatre on Armour street in Colombo 15, after watching the Tamil film Kanavukkanni (Dream Girl) at 1.30 p.m. and herded them into buses waiting nearby. They were immediately taken away for interrogation. Police parties searched the Tamil dominated suburbs of Kotahena, Armour Street and Panchikawatte near downtown Colombo this afternoon. A young Tamil girl who was arrested in this operation and released one hour ago from the Kotahena Police station said that she had been in the bathroom when the Police had entered her house. They had banged on the door of the toilet despite being told that she was bathing. She was given little time to dress by the Police who had wanted her to open the door immediately. The girl is a long time resident in the city who can speak Sinhala fluently.
